Salzburg Old Town (Salzburger Altstadt) or (Altstadt Salzburg) is the historic and navigational heart of Salzburg, a maze of streets dating back to the Middle Ages along the banks of the Salzach River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  , overlooking the Hohensalzburg Castle from the top of the hill.

How to get to the old town of Salzburg

Salzburg's old town is located south of the main train station, about a 20-minute walk or 10-minute taxi ride away, and can be explored on foot or by city buses. Most of the main attractions are located in Salzburg and it has many hotels and restaurants.

It takes about two and a half hours by train from Vienna, and the train station is about two kilometers from Mozart Square.

  • Another highlight is the Getreidegasse, the main shopping street in the historic center. It houses a large number of designer shops, small souvenir shops, many cafes and restaurants and can be enjoyed just by walking between the shops without the need to buy. 
  • Among its most important features is the grand Hohensalzburg Castle, which is approximately 900 years old as it was built in 1077 AD. for defensive purposes and has played many roles throughout history; And it turned into a prison, camp and military fortress, so it became located on top of a high hill overlooking the city, and the castle could be seen from afar while wandering the streets of the city.
  • The old town also has what is known as Mozartplatz in its center and it has many cafes where you can sit and spend some time and there is a statue of Mozart in the middle of the square.
