All you need to know about the British visa



Great Britain is an island country located off the European coast in its north-west, as it contains the island of Great Britain, which consists of; England, Scotland, Wales and part of Northern Ireland and London is its official capital.  If you plan to visit the UK, you may need to apply for a visa to enter the UK, and each visa has different eligibility criteria depending on the purpose of your visit.

Ordinary visitor visa

Allowed and prohibited with this type of visa:

  • You can visit the UK for many purposes; Such as visiting friends and family or attending a conference.
  • A visa cannot be issued to carry out paid or unpaid work for a UK company or self-employed.
  • You cannot live in the UK for long on frequent visits.
  • You cannot claim money with interest.
  • You cannot enroll in a course that is more than 6 months old.
  • You cannot marry or register a civil partnership, or file a notice with this type of visa.

Visa Eligibility Requirements

The following are the visa eligibility requirements:

UK Short Term Visitor Visa:

  • Proof of intention to leave the UK at the end of the trip.
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of the trip.
  • Proof of ability to pay for return flight or onward flight.
  • Evidence of any work or activity you wish to undertake.

Long-term visitor visa:

  • Evidence of repeated need to return to the UK.
  • Justify why you should return to the country again.
  • Proof that you intend to leave the UK at the end of each trip.

Required documents

You will need to submit the following documents:

  • A passport or any other travel document.
  • Color passport size photo.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support you during the trip; Such as a bank statement or payment statements for the last 6 months.
  • Certified translation of any documents that are not in English or Welsh.

  • Your fingerprints and photograph must be taken at the Visa Application Centre.
  • You may get the visa faster depending on the country you are in, check it out.

Student visa

Types of student visas

Below is an indication of the type of student visa:

  • Tier 4 (General) Student visa: Awarded to students who are 18 years of age or over, have received an offer from a UK educational institution and hold a valid sponsorship licence. 
  • Tier 4 student visa (child): granted to non-UK students under the age of 18, those over 16 may be allowed to work up to 10 hours per week.
  • Short-term study visa: granted to a student who wishes to visit the UK for a short period to take a short-term course; Like a training course.

Documents required to obtain a student visa

The following are the visa requirements:

  • Completed visa application form.
  • A valid passport or travel document.
  • Immigration health tax.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support you during your stay.
  • Tuberculosis screening results for some countries.
  • Passport size photo.
  • Proof of visa application fee payment.
  • Parental consent for under 18s.
  • Annex 8 Self-assessment form with attached documents for non-online applications.
  • Other documents may vary depending on your country.

How to apply for a student visa

You can apply for a student visa as follows:

  • Check your eligibility for a student visa, proof required; Confirm acceptance of studies, expenses or funding.
  • Prepare your documents.
  • Create an account on the official UK visa website.
  • Pay the application fee.
  • Go to the visa application center to submit your application, a photo of your face and your fingerprints.

Work permit requirements

The following are the requirements for obtaining a work permit:

  • You have received a job offer from an approved UK employer who will be your sponsor.
  • Possession of a sponsorship certificate issued by the sponsoring employer.
  • Pass the points-based assessment.

Categories of work visas

The following are the categories of work visas:

  • Class 2 work permit for qualified workers.
  • Disembarkation visa.
  • Class 5 for temporary workers.
  • Tier 1 visa for high value immigrants.
  • Other categories as domestic worker or company representative.
  • Tier 2 ICT visa.

Family visa

Eligible for a family visa

The persons eligible for the visa are:
  • non-European citizens; as dependent adults or dependent children of a British citizen.
  • If you have permission to stay in the UK permanently.
  • If you are the parent of a child or family member of a migrant worker who is in the UK.

Types of family visas

The following are the types of family visas:

Spouse visa:
  • Spouses can stay in the UK for up to 2.5 years, after which they can apply for a further 5 year extension.
  • In order to obtain a visa, you will need to meet and be sure of certain marital status requirements.
  • You must meet certain language requirements.
  • You will be able to include dependent children on your spouse's or fiancé's visa application.
  • Certain financial requirements must be met.
Child support visa:
  • Non-EEA children can obtain a family visa at the request of their parents or as a separate application and must be under 18 years of age.
  • The parent or guardian must be financially competent so that the child will be eligible for citizenship after 5 years of residency.
Adult dependent visa
  • You are allowed to enter the UK as a parent, grandparent or adult child of a British person, but you must be over 18.
  • It is given to someone who needs long-term care provided by your relative in the UK.
  • You are allowed to stay in the UK indefinitely as long as your relative is a British citizen or settled there.
  • British descent visa: You may be eligible for this visa for 5 years if your grandparents were born in the UK as it allows you to work, live and study there.

Information and documents required for application

The following are the documents required to obtain the visa:
  • Your name and date of birth
  • Details of any criminal convictions.
  • Proof of sufficient funds, English language level.
  • Your current passport or valid travel document.
  • Authorized translation of any document that is not in English or Welsh
  • Your parents' date of birth and your nationality if you are applying from outside the UK.
  • Photocopies of the photo page and any visa or entry stamps from previous passports.
  • Your National Insurance number, if you have one.
  • A copy of your biometric residence permit, if you have one.
  • Details of any previous immigration applications you have submitted.
  • A blank page in your passport to place your visa if applying outside the UK.
